How to Eat Healthy: A Guide to Popular Diets on the Market

You do not have to spend on a lot on food or equipment to eat well. You do not have to follow the latest fat. Nothing is going to magically make the weight come off. Instead, eating well and being healthy is all about selecting good foods. You want them to be fresh. You want to avoid processed and packaged items. If you do so, slowly but surely, you will get the results you want. Too many people are in a hurry these days. They want immediate results. Those that were found to be healthy, for example, focused on getting the correct number of calories through whole grains, fruits and vegetables. They are plant-based and also pushed nonfat dairy, healthy fats and lean protein. These diets told participants that it was okay to indulge and have a treat every once in a while. They avoid processed meals as much as possible.

Plant-based diets are on the rise, so they have their own category in the U.S. News rankings report. In addition, because so many people have difficulty eating certain foods, there is information on diets that help with digestion, like the gluten-free diet. These do not have rankings, because they are not generally used to lose weight.

Most of the diets are relatively healthy and relatively safe. The exception to this rule would be the Atkins, Paleo, Macrobiotic, Dukan, Fast, Raw Food and Supercharged Hormone diets. Their scores fell below a 3, because they encourage participants to cut back too much on particular food groups. They are simply not very nutritious; for example, the Paleo diet focuses on meat to the exclusion of dairy and grains, so it would be very difficult for participants to get the vitamin D and calcium that they need. Atkins restricts carbohydrates, so followers wind up with a lot of fat in their diet. The Raw Food Diet makes it hard to get enough vitamin D, calcium and vitamin B-12. Also, because it cuts out so many foods, participants are at risk for consuming food that has not been properly cooked.

Use common sense when starting a new diet. If you do not feel well and experience exhaustion, dizziness or trouble sleeping, you should be concerned. Healthy weight loss is good for your body, so it should not make you feel bad.
